Language Matters .. so do Definitions

The charge is guilty if you use the below sentence when you are referring to applicants, candidates, employees and/or prospective recipients of your messaging. I lifted this sentence from a press message distributed by a well-known PR Firm and when I went to give attribution, I saw it spread across a number of sites. I tried.

Companies have made the changes quietly, often by playing down terminology such as “DEI” and opening up programs once reserved for diverse applicants to everyone. Many stopped referencing their DEI programs in annual reports altogether…

Define Diverse Applicants (in red) please. Awesome, you agree with me in that every candidate brings different backgrounds, dimensions, experiences, perspectives, and points of view with them. How the statement should have read is:

Companies have made the changes quietly, often by playing down terminology such as “DEI” and opening up programs once reserved for marginalized – OR – underrepresented audiences, communities or persons to everyone. Many stopped referencing their DEI programs in annual reports altogether…

That would have been the proper sentence. Innocent mistakes that when corrected and acted upon, continues to form conversations and modeling of equality and inclusion. What’s so wrong with that? Nothing.

Which is why this hyperbolic outrage to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging efforts is a sham. Why many principled leaders are continuing to chase better for all. Are you with an organization that is steadfast or has your leadership wilted like a summer dandelion?

A quote:

“Coming out was a formative experience for me, but simply existing is what I think about more often these days.”
