When my Chief of Staff called early that Sunday morning, he said, “Are you aware of Lynn Conway?”
I said, “who?”
He said, “Lynn Conway, Chip Design Innovator Lynn Conway, noted transgender-rights activist, at one point, fired by IBM.”
I hurried through the aisles of that orange box home improvement store so that I could learn more about Lynn Conway … and draft this week’s installation. Wow, she had a story – one that until recently was largely hidden. In 2020, she received an unexpected gift: A formal apology from IBM for firing her 52 years earlier.
Which is why I applaud companies that get it right when they create content worthy of sharing broadly. Enter Service Now and their Alt Shift Life film with Tribeca Studio Productions. A twenty-eight (28) minute that is particularly special to Karen Pavlin, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer because of how it manifested and touched her life.
Have a peek – dropping the link to Alt Shift Life – in the side bar. While there, learn more about the people within the film, research what ServiceNow has done on the workforce skills, and other research that may be pertinent. If we are to exist, we must build high performing teams. That includes ignored and unfamiliar audiences.

The below graphic is a play on the Johari Window method of becoming more self-aware. According to Gartner, the Johari Window enhances self-awareness by identifying conscious and unconscious biases but requires existing self-awareness to select accurate traits. In contrast, the Nohari Window, developed as an inversion, focuses on identifying negative traits. Inspired by the Lean In era, it provides a complementary approach, highlighting areas for improvement and fostering a more holistic self-understanding.

I opened the event and I’m telling you from start to finish, each speaker delivered. Yes, there is a small cost to enjoy the replays but it is well worth team viewing. I’d suggest you score an early bird ticket for 2025. See you next year.
